[as Lucas and Spielberg] We’re gonna give you a crazy, balls-out action sequence for 10 minutes, because we’re gonna talk about bible stories for the next 20 in this movie. — Down in Front,

When he goes under the truck, that’s the clearest Yakima Canutt [homage]. … Trey represents the knowledge of this podcast. Well, just the old and cranky knowledge. [laughter] But isn’t that the best kind of knowledge? — Down in Front,
Raiders of the Lost Ark @1:21:10

[re: Indy's later war service] Why didn’t Indiana Jones [say], ‘Okay, long story short: I know you guys have a box that melts Nazis. [Laughter] Just get that out of storage. We’ll end this real fast.’ — Down in Front,

      • Fairly good commentary from AfterShock. A fair amount of trivia and background. A rather excessive number of Lord of the Rings jokes. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was a Chuck Jones cartoon, not Friz Freleng. It's easy to remember, because Chuck Jones drew every character (Bugs Bunny, Tom the Cat, the Grinch, Rikki) to look like himself.

      • A bit of a lark for MMM in a very early commentary. Entertaining enough, as always. Some very unfortunate ethnic slurs spoil things a bit—however ironically they may be meant. And key grip Arlen Spector sounds suspiciously like David....

      • Pretty good commentary for the classic from Watch a Movie. Funny with a bit of background, but a little excessive quoting of completely different films. Some of the audio is a bit staticky.

      • Just listened to the beginning of this. Cort & Fatboy take on the first Indy. Oddly, Fatboy already participated in Film Fever Radio's Temple of Doom commentary. They have a little trouble at the start but power thru it without resetting.

      • Good commentary from Sick Feats, altho no real background or analysis. The discussion of how the ark got to Egypt is quite funny. Ellen Degeneres (1958) is 7 years younger than Karen Allen (1951), who is 9 years younger than Harrison Ford (1942) who was 39 in Raiders (1981). Given that Marion complains to Indy that she "was a child" when they had a romance, it seems reasonable that Ellen—23 in 1981—could have played 3 years older so that Marion would have been about 16 to Indy's 29 at the time of their relationship. Karen—30 in 1981—would have been 20, so she has to play about 3 or 4 years younger. And Ellen would have looked great in Indy 4. Karen was showing her age (I know: it's not the years, it's the mileage). Sala sings Gilbert and Sullivan songs ("A British Tar is a Soaring Soul").

      • Great work by DIF. The title is awesome, not stupid. A great title is intriguing before you see the movie and makes perfect sense after you see it. Cops "tasting" cocaine is supposed to be just testing if it numbs the lip or tongue. It's a topical anesthetic. It's still not a good idea, of course. Tasting curare seems like a really, really bad idea. The giant stone ball idea came from Scrooge McDuck comic books. Lucas and Spielberg admitted it; they loved those comic books. Indy doesn't speak every language except Hovitos. He doesn't speak German OR Arabic; Sallah does. The headpiece of the staff of Ra and the temple it's in don't "come from God". They are Egyptian; that's why the Ark is "lost". Half-way thru, there's an extended discussion of the nature and history of God. (God vs iron chariots)

      • I haven't listened to this yet. Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of their god bashing. It's getting a little old and is usually just insulting (and usually ignorant. Dorkman's understanding of Jesus' death made me face palm.) and usually has nothing to do with the film. I would feel the same if a Christian film commentary group insulted atheists or homosexuals every chance they got. I want to hear their thoughts on the film, not religion or politics (they have every right to do so BTW). But... I'm sure I'll listen as usual ;p "(God vs iron chariots)" Actually, this is not "obscure among believers". I've heard this many times. We deal with this stuff all the time. In Judges 1:19 the "he" is referring to Judah not God. Just because God was on their side did not mean that they would win every battle (there is a list just a few verses later that gives the names of the places they did not conquer until they became a stronger force). It meant that they would eventually win the war, if they followed His plan, and that they had His blessing to fight. In fact, He actually told them earlier that they would NOT win the land quickly. Exodus 23:28-30 "I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land." This whole thing is based on false assumptions by people who don't know the Bible well enough. God allowed men to make mistakes and lose every once in awhile (we know from other places that they were freaked out by chariots and God would give them a "pep talk" about having faith. Sometimes they would win and sometimes they would lose). He could have wiped them all out instantly (as He sometimes did), but He clearly wanted His people to fight for themselves and show some chutzpah. To make assumptions that this "slipped in unnoticed from another time" and is in any way lessening God's ability is to ignore how He operates throughout the rest of the Bible.

      • Here is another version of what was said in Exodus 23. In case you didn't know, these take place before Judges. Deut. 7:22 "The LORD your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the wild beasts would grow too numerous for you. I'm sure if they had conquered the land in one swoop people would say that THESE verses are contradictions.

      • I don't feel like we've done much God-bashing recently, or at all, really. Aside from discussions of religion in Raiders and the Legion commentary, I don't remember instances where we were addressing God. (I'm also not as likely to notice it as someone who would be offended, so I could be wrong.) Even Legion, which had a lot of religious talk, was entirely inclusive of the tenants of religion and we discussed better ways of executing a story using the rules of religion, at no point were we like "this movie is stupid because God is stupid." I think as God-bashingest as we ever were was on Contact, and we actually haven't gotten comments accusing us of being unfair to religion for that episode (or any others that I can think of at the moment). Is there a specific sort of problem we have, or is it a tone issue? Tone we can't really do much about, the personalities on the show are the personalities on the show. If it's something we keep getting wrong or an insult we're not aware we're making, that we can work on.

      • Teague Thanks for responding. Funny enough I haven't listened to Contact or Legion. I would have to go back and listen to the episodes to get specifics (which I likely will since I have already listened to some of them multiple times). Its mostly an accumulation of a jab here and there. But it seems like every chance there is to insult Christians someone takes it. I believe Tron was the last one where it got really annoying. I think that's where Dorkman made his comments about Jesus' death. Like I said, you have the right to speak your mind. I'm not even saying you should change. But "I" listen to be entertained and informed on film making, not to hear religious and political soap-boxing. The reason it gets old is because I am a fan of the show. Its the attitude in which it is delivered that takes me out of the enjoyment of the rest of the commentary. I will get back on specifics later. Peace.

      • This is my frist comment on this site ever and I have seriously loved the commentaries on Zarban.com for a long time. I felt compelled to add to the disscussion here. Probably over a year ago or so I began listening to a lot of DIF's commentaries. I'd say off hand I listened to well over half their catalog if not more. I really enjoyed hearing the insight with each film's story structure, actors, and the technical knowledge all the commentatories had. Living in SoCal and trying to be a part of the entertainment industry, they all knew a lot about the workings involved in filmmaking. They all shared their love of film and art in general. Their enthusiasm was contagious with every new entry. Sadly, overtime their material began to wear on me. The lack of insight and researched knowledge of the films being watched became less and less. Replaced with lackluster observations and running jokes. But most of all what made me stop listening was the decorum. Even though the audio quality is much better than the average commentary on Zarban, which I very much appreciated, there was constant overlapping of voices, yelling almost at times to get their voice across forcefully at times. Trey comes to mind most with this matter and I began to actively avoid all his entries. I understand the feeling of urgancy to entertain, when recording these, but it doesn't mean it has to be a battle and pride really isn't needed. As for the religious aspects addressed in the OP. All the speakers on DIF are all like-minded athesis. Which isn't a problem. I'd venture to say a great deal of commentators on this site are not very religious. It's just they seem to handle it better in their work or at least the serious ones do. Tysto, for one, does a excellent job of expressing his opinions on religious matters without going into offensiveness. After listening to most of his material, I would venture say he isn't a member of a major religion and yet uses history and language to express his opinions. The difference comes when you openly mock the religion or flow up a offense comment about religion with a verbal faux band-aid cleansing oneself of any wrong doing. Having it peppered throughout a hour and a half film and it becomes very erroneous. It's pretty easy to make fun of something when everyone in the room agrees with you. After being a fan of DIF for a decent period of time, it was no longer enjoyable anymore and I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to DIF anymore and probably won't.

      • Great fun with the Dr and Lynch. Their fantasy of Lynch crashing the Doctor's impending wedding with a bazooka is hilarious. Lynch stumbles over a "Yakima Canutt" reference. Diesel electric submarines didn't dive except when attacking. They could only stay under (on electric power) for a few minutes.

      • Good background and plenty of enthusiasm for a film Bradley obviously loves. Lots of narrating and talking to the characters, tho. The sound of the movie is up a bit too high. It's almost a co-commentary with John Williams. And perhaps a LITTLE preoccupied with Marion's underwear.

      • Pretty good commentary from Commentary Track Stars. They do a fair amount of off-topic reminiscing and chit-chat. A rather long discussion about sequels-that-might-not-have-been is rather pointless. But the conversation about Omar is hilarious—at least until they beat it to death. The fact that Indy's motivation is the same thruout the movie is very common in action films. And the heroes do have reversals; it's highly episodic in that Indy gets the Ark and loses the Ark a couple of times. Vichy water is a brand of mineral water. In Casablanca, it obviously reminds Renault of the collaborationist government in Vichy. On the boat, Indy hides in an air intake. Diesel-electric submarines only submerged when attacking or fleeing; they could only stay underwater for a short time.
