From Undiscovered Country Podcast:

Just in time for Star Trek: Into Darkness, Kevin, Tim and Beth look back on the hotly debated, much loved and much hated 2009 film, Star Trek. Say what you will about whether this reboot is up to Trek standards or not (hint: We think it is!), it is by far the most successful film in franchise history and we had a blast doing the commentary!

We recommend that you listen to this commentary especially if you didn’t like this film. Hopefully, we’ll help you see it in a whole new way.

Far from the big, noisy, all show and no substance movie it’s often portrayed to be, we’ll talk about how Star Trek explores its characters and creates a human story amidst all the action and adventure. We’ll also talk about the amazing interplay between free will and determinism and how calling and destiny are of great importance in Star Trek and in the relationship between God and humankind.

Spock’s Christ figure status makes a cameo or two here as well and you won’t want to miss our discussions of the Gospel as the satisfaction for the longings of Gene Roddenberry’s heart, the nature of the universe, quantum physics and, of course, fashion! It’s a jam-packed commentary full of theology, philosophy, geekery and humor we know you’ll love!

From Treks in Sci Fi:

This weekend on the podcast it’s back to Trek and some of the usual fun and chit chat. First off, I play one of Rick Moyer’s great Trek-themed Christmas songs. You can find more of his awesome work over the link HERE. I start off the week by a few announcments and a nice listener comment from Richard in Australia. On the movie scene it’s looking like the Trek film will be showing up in IMAX next spring along with the normal theaters. also, there are some cool new pictures out from the Trek MMO game and some news it may come out late in 2009 – which would be very cool. It’s looking pretty sweet right now. After a few more quick comments it’s on to the full commentary review and discussion about the Enterprise episode for this week called, “North Star.”

This is a fun episode and also one with a very Trek-like message about prejudice and tolerance of others. It’s set on a planet that looks like the Old West where a group of humans were taken hundreds of years ago. This allows for the cast and crew of the Enterprise to dress up in period costumes and have some fun. There are some cool fights, action and even a big shoot out towards the end of the episode. Overall, a nice break from the Xindi tale during season three of the series. I liked this one a lot as I’m a fan of Westerns and Trek both. Loved the bit with Trip and T’Pol going for a ride on a horse. Priceless! We have some comments from Rick Moyer and Mike from the UK for this episode too (make sure to listen to the entire podcast as I slipped their comments in at the end).

From Treks in Sci Fi:

This week I do another full episode commentary for a neat episode of “Enterprise” and also some news, collectible info and more. Direct download here:

For the podcast this week I start off by thanking some of the recent donations received for the podcast. Much appreciated and helpful guys – thanks! If you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute – just $5 gets you mentioned on the cast and my gratitude. Check HERE to donate to the show! Then on to some news and other information. I talk about “Star Trek: New Voyages” once more. They seem to have some great episodes in store for us in the near future. Check out their website HERE to learn all about what’s on tap from their Trek fan film series for the rest of 2008 and into 2009. I also chat briefly about the return of “Stargate: Atlantis” with Trek alumni Robert Picardo as a series regular. And I share my thoughts on the new “Hellboy II” film which I saw yesterday. This is a great follow up to the first movie and if you enjoyed that one I’m certain you will like this one too. Lots of action, humor, and amazing visuals – just a great time at the movies. And I play another opening theme music/credit sequence from a favorite late 80′s fantasy TV show.

I then move on to the “Enterprise” episode, “Doctor’s Orders.” This is a very different and interesting episode from season three of the series. It focuses on Doctor Phlox while most of the crew is put into a coma-like state to travel through part of the expanse. John Billingsly gets to shine in this episode and spends much of the time dictating a letter or talking to the Captain’s dog, Porthos. I like it when some of the other characters get their time and get to show what they can do. There’s also a nice little mystery and scare factor going on in this episode too. I hope you enjoy my full commentary as I watch it once again while recording my thoughts.

In the first of a trifecta of movie commentaries, the Freaks take on JJ Abram’s Star Trek from 2009. Hear from moment to moment what the Freaks love and hate about this “re-imagining” or whatever the hell you call it, of the original Trek crew. Don’t expect them to take a dump on it Dark Knight style, but this is no love-in, either – the Freaks do have some serious issues with this one. So sit back, pop in your DVD of Trek ’09 and listen to the Freaks eat, gripe, burp and sometimes even praise their way through this blockbuster hit – all in front of a live audience of Scott’s kids!

From Speakeasy’s Podcast:

Some months ago Dr. and Lynch after recording their Empire Strikes Back commentary were hungry for more and decided to do an off-the-cuff commentary on the new Star Trek movie. Then, more recently, Dr. and Tysto teamed up for a much better prepared commentary on the same movie.

So here for your amusement we now let you compare and contrast two commentaries on the same movie. This first version is the Dr. and Lynch recording. Slightly drunken, completely spontaneous but still entertaining enjoy listening to Dr. boast about how much he knows about Star Trek only to repeatedly make errors when talking about Star Trek history. Lynch keeps him on the straight and narrow however.

A different take on the previous Star Trek commentary we posted on the Speakeasy, so relax and enjoy the movie as we realise that nothing at all makes sense, the $150 million dollar homage to lens flare and how perfect we think just about every actor in the movie is.

From Tysto commentaries:

JJ Abrams’ reboot of the storied Star Trek franchise meets its match in the form of myself and the Doctor from Speakeasy Podcast, in which we deftly pick apart the minor plot inconsistencies, such as every single thing that happens. However, we do love the film (even if it does feel like $150 million dollar fan fiction aimed at lens flare aficionados) so we fawn over the actors and effects and compare it to the original series and movies. But we also expose the ugly specter of racism and alcoholism in Starfleet (speaking of which: take a drink every time someone abandons his post as captain!).

Errata: Thruout the film, I stupidly call the Narada the Naruto. Also, grog rations were ended by the British navy in 1970. And the one where Kirk angers Spock with insults is “This Side of Paradise” and not “Shore Leave”. (Those are all mine. The Doctor’s “facts” are all “true”.)

Join Jen1, Aaron, Sue and me for our commentary of JJ Abrams’ Star Trek !

A cataclysm over 150 years into the future throws two ships into the 23rd century, altering the course of history. With a different life where he never knew his father, James T. Kirk becomes a brilliant yet cynical misfit who is finally convinced to join Starfleet by Captain Christopher Pike in 2255. Three years later, Kirk, Spock and the young crew of the USS Enterprise, with guidance from Spock’s future self, must figure out a way to work together to prevent the one responsible for the death of Kirk’s father, the future Romulan known as Nero, from wreaking destruction throughout the Federation in a mad quest for vengeance, using a powerful new weapon. For some, their help comes too late.

Happy listening!

From Jon Madsen’s Movie Commentary Podcast:

Alright, if you’ve been hesitating in your downloading of these silly Star Trek podcasts, you’re in luck! THIS is the one you can probably listen to because THIS is the one where we do a live commentary of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie from 2009 — and you saw THAT movie and probably really really liked it!

Yes, we realize we already talked about this movie way back in podcast 30, but hey, who’s complaining? We did the work — and you get the reward… unless you hate hearing us talk… which we suppose could be very likely.

From MMM Commentaries:

We keep the ball rolling with a commentary on a movie with the word star in it. Not sure exactly how long we can keep that particular sphere in motion but let’s give it a crack.

This week the MMM team wax lyrical about the Star Trek movie that pretty well impressed us all this year, the originally titled Star Trek. Just Star Trek. No roman numerals in sight with this baby (though if you are keeping score at home we are up to XI).

JJ Abrams takes us on a journey to a galaxy far far… no that is not right. He takes us on a journey slap bang on our own doorstep as he pits the Enterprise crew against the evil Nero (what is it with the obsession with sandal-related names today?).

The MMM team of Trevor, Geoff, Tony and one slightly asleep Gecko take us through a film which will hopefully put Star Trek right back up there.

Star Trek – the movie that proves you can still have your canon and eat it too.

From Rifftrax:

Like the odometer on your 1984 Plymouth Reliant rolling back over to zero, the Star Trek series gets a reset! The previous thirty-eight films had barely begun to scratch the surface of these fascinating characters, and so Star Trek is back to answer all your burning questions: What’s Scotty’s favorite brand of bacon? Why does no one seize the moment and slap the hell out of Chekov? Why does Uhura jam that huge piece of machined steel into her ear? Was Spock’s mom younger than him, and which uncle taught him that nerve pinchy thing?

A tour de force of shameless retconning, Star Trek nevertheless introduces a bold new sci-fi innovation: time travel! And black holes! And characters meeting themselves! And ice planets! And evil nemeses who vow revenge! And ship flybys! These are by themselves very compelling reasons to watch, but Star Trek gives you an even more compelling one—to learn Uhura’s first name. Sure, you never knew she didn’t have a first name, it was never an issue for you, and you haven’t even given it one millisecond’s thought, but at last you get to find out! (It’s Nyota, by the way.)

Mike, Kevin and Bill self-consciously tug down their red Federation uniform tops and go boldly into Star Trek!

From Rifftrax:

Continuing in the fine tradition of aftermarket sci-fi Series accessories, Rifftrax Presents is proud once again to jump into the fan-licious world of Star Trek Phase II – or Star Trek New Voyages, which appears to be the series’ maiden name. It’s the amazing all-volunteer fan-created continuation of Star Trek, the Original Series but has better sound, cornier corn, pointier Vulcans, paunchier paunches, Scottier Scotties, and it riffs like a dream.

This time around, Riffers Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy pitch their pith at the episode To Serve All My Days, the story of a waitress in love with – no wait, that’s Waitress. This one features the character Pavel Chekov, who after a freak accident becomes the actor Walter Koenig, an affliction for which there is no cure. You get dueling Chekovs, pre-head-bulge Klingons, and a surprise ending that’ll have you standing up and shouting, “Well-it-they-what-the-hunh?”

What are you waiting for? Beam it down, Snotty! Riff long and prosper!

* For convenience, this product includes the RiffTrax combined with the Star Trek New Voyages video at no extra charge! Or, you can choose to download just the RiffTrax commentary separately if you prefer to sync them up yourself. All formats are made available in your My Files area after purchase.

Rifftrax Presents veteran riffers Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy, beaning on (or is it “beaming?” I can never remember) the most ambitious exercise in fan fiction since that really good Civil War reenactment! These are sumptuously produced “new episodes” of the original Star Trek series, authentically detailed and produced by Trek fans, yet with the beefy swagger of a roomful of Shatners.

Rifftrax Presents: Star Trek: Phase II: World Enough and Time! A title that has more colons than a gastroenterologist’s waiting room, and also contains more delicious hamming than Smithfield, Virginia at Easter. Original Series veteran George Takei reprises his role as Sulu, but as an older Sulu, due to a spontaneous fluctuation in the space-time…Okay, it doesn’t really matter, does it? It has Sulu, pretty women, pretty men, time-warping, and enough wigs to fill Phyllis Diller’s closet.

We come to a perhaps temporary conclusion in our journey through the Star Trek universe and come to rest on an episode from the second season of Enterprise – Future Tense.

The Enterprise crew find a small craft drifting in space and are surprised to find it contains a human corpse. More questions arise when both the Suliban and Tholians make claims to the craft.

Geoff, Tony and Peter take you though this episode with enough time conundrums to keep any Trek fan happy.
