As always, when I think of the end of days, the first name that comes to mind when I’m thinking of people whom I want representing the good guys when it comes time for the apocalypse is Stephen Colbert. The second name that comes to mind would probably be beefy former Mr. Olympia and action movie star extraordinaire Arnold Schwarzenegger, the acclaimed thespian lauded for his performances in BATMAN & ROBIN and HERCULES IN NEW YORK. END OF DAYS might as well be a documentary on Mr. Schwarzenegger’s daunting task of saving the world and preventing the apocalypse in that troubled year of 1999, when LIMP BIZKIT, MARILYN MANSON and P.O.D. topped the charts, and Britney Spears was still reasonably sane. Ah, those were simpler times back then. And who better to capture the culture better than (Razzie) award-winning director Peter Hyams, the auteur behind such thought provoking classics as TIMECOP and STAY TUNED (we here at iRiffs are still chilled by the disturbing performances of Jeffrey Jones and John Ritter!).

In the tough role of the Devil himself is THE USUAL SUSPECTS and COOL WORLD star Gabriel Byrne, who inhabits his role so perfectly, you would believe that Satan is standing right in front of you, and he’s overacting like there’s no tomorrow. And even though END OF DAYS might look like a poor attempt to piece together ROSEMARY’S BABY and DIE HARD at first glance, looks can be deceiving. Be assured that END OF DAYS is a brilliant masterpiece of the action horror genre, and will sure to rival CITIZEN KANE and CASABLANCA for the title of the greatest achievement in American cinema.
