Roundup: catching up is hard to do

It was pretty big week, this week. We welcomed Website of Doom and their numerous commentaries into the fold. I’m still catching up with them, as I’ve instituted a sort of 2-at-a-time rule.

I caught up with Deaths Door Prods’s Waterworld and Total Recall ’12. I caught up with Zombie vs Shark’s Twilight and Human Centipede. I caught up with more Oliver Harper, which added our first Day of the Dead ’85.

WAYDM took a shot at Cloud Atlas. Sean Pultz contributed Young Frankenstein. Bradley Taylor gave us his take on An American Carol and some Futurama. And I added some Superstuff from Ultimate Movie Commentary.

I caught up with more Game of Thrones commentaries from Winter is Coming and MASH from AfterMASH. Sofa Dogs went back in time to take another look at Veronica Mars. I gotta check that show out.

Today, Gene Wilder turns 80 years old

The great Gene Wilder turned 80 today. He’s woefully underrepresented on the House of Commentaries, but his best-remembered films are here: Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and, of course, See No Evil, Hear No Evil.* He’s the widower of Gilda Radner.

* Kidding. That was crap.

He had a bit part debut in Bonnie and Clyde. He was the inspiration for the character “Joan Wilder” in Romancing the Stone. He lost one kidney in a poker game. He scaled Mount Everest wearing a toga. He told video store clerk Quentin Tarantino “you should become a film maker.” He’s a man, he’s a meme, he’s a marsupial.

I guess what I’m saying is, Gene Wilder is the greatest man in the world.

It was another great week, this week. We were joined by Aussie team Nerdzilla, with The Black Hole and Clash of the Titans ’81.

I caught up with Ultimate Movie Commentary’s march thru Next Gen Trek movies. Commentary Track Stars did one of the TV episodes as well as Fight Club. Horrorphilia weighed in on Wishmaster. Film Bin knocked fixed Short Circuit 2. And Deaths Door Prods checked in with the beginning of horror remake month.

Sean Pultz gave us our third practically-perfect-in-every-way-except-Dick-Van-Dyke’s-accent Mary Poppins. Sofa Dogs and Tysto tackled the Nolan head-scratcher Inception. I caught up with more Zombie vs Shark in the form of Human Centipede 2 and Batman & Robin. Dr. Action and the Kick Ass kid continued in their relentless effort to make me care about Gary Daniels. And What Are You Doing Movie? puzzled thru the magic of Demolition Man.

MMM Commentaries did more classic Who. Staggering Stories did more new Who.

Roundup: newcomers, plenty of superheroes, and I shout at people

It was a great week, this week, with new stuff from new and old regulars, including the first of a couple dozen video entries from Oliver Harper. And I was also tipped off to the existence of Zombie vs Shark, who has done The Relic and also our first for space-Nazi indie Iron Sky. And Winter is Coming came with the first of the Game of Thrones stuff.

I HATE GAME OF THRONES. IT IS TERRIBLE, AND ALL OF YOU FAN PEOPLE ARE WRONG.

WAYDM delivered Last Action Hero, the beginning of the end of Schwarzenegger, in my opinion. Tysto served up Captain America. Bradley Taylor added five entries. In one week. FIVE.

Bloodbaths and Boomsticks skipped right to the end of Star Wars with Jedi. I also added All the President’s Men, another AFI 100 entry from Rob Caravaggio. Old Oilhouse was back with Mortal Kombat. Ultimate Movie Commentary bashed out some Next Gen Star Trek.

Soulless Minions took a look at the Rebecca De Mornay-Mary Gross buddy cop comedy Feds, proving once again that they HAVE NO SOULS. I caught up with Legendary Frog’s Power Rangers movie commentary. Geekfest Rants discovered that Flash Gordon is alive. (OPEN FIRE! ALL WEAPONS! DISPATCH WAR ROCKET AJAX TO BRING BACK HIS BODY!) And Commentary Track Stars did our first Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Batman Universe returned with more animated Batman. Jimbo Ritter delved into animated Spider-Man. Two True Freaks got into animated Superman on their new site, which is a bigger pain the ass to navigate than their old site. (USE PERMALINKS, YOU FREAKS!) And Sofa Dogs checked out the (I’m sure perfectly legally acquired) unaired 2011 pilot for Wonder Woman.

It was a modest week, this week, mainly because I went away for the weekend and therefore stopped adding entries on Wednesday. I did welcome Animation Podcast and their Tangled commentary, however.

Sean Pultz added Scarface ’32 and Twister to his tally. Commentary Track Stars dropped Casablanca as well as some Star Trek. Potter Pensieve got around to the fifth Potter.

Rifftrax became the first to do a commentary (after a fashion) for one of the Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies. Cultdom Collective and Staggering Stories did more new Who.

It was a particularly good week, this week. RebelForce Radio tried their hand at the first Star Wars. Movie Crypt joined us with Friday the 13th 2.

Tysto finished off the last of the classic Star Trek features with Undiscovered Country. Speaking of which, Undiscovered Country did Star Trek ’09, as did Bradley Taylor, in addition to yet another Ernest movie. Old Oilhouse did a tribute to Ray Harryhausen with Valley of Gwangi. WAYDM may have done the same with the The Mummy ’99, which seemed to have been inspired by Harryhausen. Commentary Track Stars tried to puzzle out Schizopolis.

Film Bin put out our fourth Cynthia Rothrock flick, No Retreat, No Surrender 2, and also more Due South. Sean Pultz did Darby O’Gill. House of Horrors fished for Piranha 3DD. Terror Transmission visited Phantasm.

Two True Freaks made a big move to their own domain, but they don’t seem to have permalinks I can link to. But they left behind Wrath of Khan. Rob Caravaggio did Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, bringing our westerns count to about 7.

Goats in the Machine did zombie Nazi flick Dead Snow for VE Day. And I caught up with Deaths Door Prods in their march thru horror remakes with Nightmare ’10 and Amityville ’05—our first Amityville movie of all, oddly enough.

Batman Universe did more animated Batman. Cultdom Collective did more new Who. MMM Commentaries did more classic Who. Jimbo Ritter decided to try some animated Tron. Shut up and Watch This did animated Transformers.

Double secret probation outage *UPDATE

UPDATE: The great majority of stuff I host directly is now back up and available.

You may or may not have noticed problems in the last couple of days with reaching “direct download” commentaries that I host. This is because most of those files are hosted on the House of Commentaries’ sister site the White House Museum (whitehousemuseum.org).

Normally, the White House Museum is a delightfully obsessive look at the history and architecture of the president’s residence, with nearly every one of its 135+ rooms fully documented in photos as far back as sources allow. And a small corner of it I use as a repository for commentaries because Zarban.com is fairly full (WHM is a larger account with much more space).

However, since sometime the day before yesterday, it has been a black hole of Internet nothingness. I have GoDaddy’s team of top analysts hard at work on the problem, whenever they can find time to stop watching their own semi-pornographic commercials.

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen (IMDb – Wiki) died last week at the age of 92 of too much awesome. He’s not well represented here at the House of Commentaries, which is too bad. But a couple of his stop-mo monster movies are here as well as a few films inspired by them. Missing are all those Sinbad and Argonauts movies that were his most representative works. Get on that, people!

Harryhausen did not work on 1933’s King Kong. That was Willis O’Brien. But he worked with O’Brien on 1949’s Mighty Joe Young before venturing off on his own.

It was a fine week, this week, with all kinds of entries from a crop of new regulars.

Commentary Track Stars decided to explain Babe. I caught up with more of Rob Caravaggio’s work on the classics, including our first Woody Allen movie: Annie. Pulp Nightmare did Tank Girl.

What Are You Doing, Movie? (née Down in Front—well, née Geekza, but married for years to Mr. Down in Front before the recent messy divorce) finally returned with Van Helsing. Soulless Minions of Orthodoxy after a several week hiatus with a spiffy new logo and a fresh copy of Iron Eagle, featuring Louis Gosset, Jr, who was yelling at white boys decades before Samuel L Jackson stole his act.

Bradley Taylor did several more commentaries, including The Great Outdoors, and I caught up with a few more from AfterMASH. BastianTime returned several months after doing The NeverEnding Story to do its sequel.

I also found Billy Jack by Talking Through the Movies and From Beyond, by Bloodbaths and Boomsticks.

Jimbo Ritter delivered an episode of GI Joe: Renegades. Cultdom Collective and Staggering Stories did more new Who.

Dr. Action and the Kick Ass Kid delivered up another Gary Daniels (yes! THE Gary Daniels) actioner. Video Warriors chatted up Jessica Fletcher. Bradley Taylor released four more from his collection.

Jimbo Ritter presented more animation. I caught up with a bit more of Rob Caravaggio’s work on the classics. Film Bin finally gave us a commentary for Buckaroo Banzai. I’m still waiting for Buckaroo Banzai vs. The World Crime League, Hollywood!

Commentary Track Stars ticked Clerks 2 off their list. Tysto released The Bourne Identity, the film he’s compared every Bond film to since Casino Royale. Horrorphilia did Wrong Turn. Terror Transmission did a Corman Klassic.

Cultdom Collective kept up on Doctor Who. MMM did a classic. Deaths Door Prods did the telemovie as well as Robert Downey, Jr.’s The Singing Detective. Sofa Dogs released another chat about Angel with Tim Minear.

It was a fine week, this week. We were joined by Talking Through the Movies with four interesting choices and Jimbo Ritter with some animation.

Pulp Nightmare did John Carter. Sofa Dogs released 2008’s version of Prom Night. Commentary Track Stars watched Children of Men. Bradley Taylor continued in his attempts at commentating on every movie ever made with Pete’s Dragon, Herbie Goes Bananas, and The Marine. And I continued catching up with Rob Caravaggio.

Rifftrax released Kingdom of the Spiders, and I caught up with some iRiffs. Honestly, the iRiffs system at Rifftrax is so terrible anymore it’s hard to even figure out what is a valid commentary or even who the commentators are.

Staggering Stories tried to keep pace with new Who. Batman Universe did more animated Batman.

Caught up with last week’s slacking off this week.

Denim Cowboy weighed in with some anime. Batman Universe explored their favorite superhero some more. Commentary Track Stars did another Lego Star Wars spoof as well as Con Air. Deaths Door Prods did Doomwatch and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Dr. Action and the Kick Ass Kid did two Gary Daniels movies. Who is Gary Daniels? I have no idea.

Shut up and Watch This did the Time Warp again with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Horrorphilia gave us another Freddy vs Jason. Film Bin followed up on their threat to do more Musketeers.

Tysto did the second Mad Max movie (or, if you’re not Australian, the first). Rifftrax booted up The Apple and got the “sad Mac” icon. Rob Caravaggio joined us with several la-di-dah films (I believe that’s a genre now).

Sean Pultz did two films about girls singing about being miserable. Two True Freaks did Iron Man 2. Terror Transmission finally got around to The Fly ’86. Movie Preview Critic tried to explain RoboCop 2. GeekFest Rants did They Live. Bradley Taylor took it easy and only released 40 new entries.

Cultdom Collective stayed current with Who. Undiscovered Country explored more Star Trek. Staggering Stories got half way thru Firefly. MMM Commentaries tried their hand at Babylon 5.

Don’t let the numbers fool you. It was a fine week this week. I just got busy/lazy (the worst of all combinations aside from, perhaps, explosive/contagious) and failed to log many entries.

As a result, I logged Out Now’s look at Evil Dead 2. Some more animation from Shut up and Watch This. Rifftrax’s Viva Knievel (my favorite of the Mexican Knievel series apart from Y Tu Knievel También). Jurassic Park from Sean Pultz. And Inception from Commentary Track Stars.

Impossible Podcasts and MMM Commentaries watched some more new Who.

It was a big week this week, with some unfortunate news, some anniversaries, and some welcome newcomers.

Witchs Hat joined with Night of the Living Dead to set the tone. Tysto followed with the terrifying alien plan to raise the dead for some reason in Plan 9 From Outer Space. Sofa Dogs (with DIF’s Michael “Dorkman” Scott guesting again) laid out the case for the dead never really leaving in the first place in Beetlejuice. Deaths Door Prods finished off the Resident Evil movies with a bullet to the head. Goats in the Machine bypassed the dead to deliver Resurrection.

Out Now recited the right incantation to summon The Evil Dead. Ultimate Movie Commentary did all three in the series. Directors Club joined with Creepshow.

In non-zombie news, Down in Front dropped The Hunger Games. Commentary Track Stars did Speed. Horrorphilia chose Hostel. Pulp Nightmare found something to like about Rocky 4 and something more to say about Street Fighter. Denim Cowboy’s Radical Squadron did the animated Street Fighter 2. Terror Transmission released The Fly ’58.

Dottie Smith joined with the various Avengers commentaries except for The Avengers. Popculture Galaxy remedied that with their inaugural entry. JoBlo Commentaries did Jurassic Park. Double D was back with Tomb Raider. Prognosis Negative dropped Never Say Never Again, the closest thing the Bond movies have to a zombie story.

Even Whovians Staggering Stories got into the swing of the week’s theme with “Army of Ghosts” and “Doomsday”. I caught up with Cultdom Collective and Who’s He doing classic Who. Cultdom Collective caught up with the latest 11th Doctor adventure before anyone else.

So long, Roger Ebert

Roger Ebert was an inspiration to me. I watched him on public television in the 1970s and on network television in the ’80s. He and Gene Siskel taught me as a kid that reasonable people can disagree. And Ebert’s explanation of his ratings taught me that it’s valid to value a movie based mostly on whether or not it succeeds at what it set out to do; not just on some preconceived notion of what a movie ought to do. So it’s okay to like cheesy movies, but you can’t dismiss arty movies just because you don’t like what they’re trying to do.

As a critic, Pauline Kael was probably closer to my taste, but I bought Ebert’s books and read his reviews from time to time and always enjoyed his sharp, opinionated, but enthusiastic point of view.

Ebert was a champion of film commentaries. He was even one of the first to talk about fan-made commentaries. And he did several of his own. As I noted at the time, that happened to come in handy when he lost the ability to speak.

In the grand scheme of things, movie critics don’t have that big an effect on the world but the world was richer with Roger Ebert in it.

Happy 4th anniversary to Down in Front!

Down in Front celebrated its fourth anniversary this week with an April Fool’s prank with its release of The Hunger Games (my favorite movie about Hungry Hungry Hippos). Redirect after redirect went to pages about perennial punching bag Surrogates and Teague Chrystie cackling madly until at last you could get to the actual download page and hear their discussion of those sweet, sweet hippos and their desperate hunger for marbles.*

* I haven’t actually listened to the commentary yet.

Congratulations on 7 years, Sofa Dogs!

Today, John Pavlich celebrates his SEVENTH anniversary with the Sofa Dogs podcast. His 202nd commentary featured the return of Tim Minear to talk about Angel. Minear had done a couple of Buffy episodes with John some years ago. Whether it’s the Whedonverse or horror movies or some quirky flick from his youth in the ’90s, John always brings passion and insight.

John of course took over the show from Jack Paar back when it was called The Sofa Dog Show Starring Jack Paar, airing nightly on the old DuMont Network (back when Howdy Doody was a real boy—before the terrible, terrible accident and he had to be replaced with a marionette).

Who can forget the famous episode when Jack hosted Jonathan Winters, Phyllis Diller, and Joss Whedon; and Phillis Diller said that Giles must have worn tweed diapers and Joss pointed out that they’d actually made that same joke in Buffy’s season two? And then Jonathan pointed out that he’d made that same joke two years earlier about William F Buckley! Ah, good times….

It was a massive week this week, with newcomers Undiscovered Country and Goats in the Machine, and the return of SuperGeeks.

Out Now did GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra just in time for the new GI Joe movie. KaijuCast did War of the Gargantuas. All of Whine and Space did the seasonal Leprechaun (as did Goats in the Machine) and more Lost.

In the completionist realm, Ultimate Movie Commentary dropped all the Twilight movies. Bradley Taylor continued his relentless assault on cinema with eight more commentaries, including finishing off the Ernest P Worrell series and the Dirty Harry series. Deaths Door Prods did the Resident Evil movies. Prognosis Negative did four more James Bond flicks. Shut up and Watch This continued their tear thru oddball animation.

Two True Freaks did Wizard of Oz just in time for The Great and Power Oz movie. And Film Bin did Return to Oz for presumably the same reason, as well as a couple of others. Commentary Track Stars did 2001: A Space Odyssey. Horrorphilia was back to do New Nightmare. Sean Pultz took a look at Batman ’89.

Rifftrax was back with the Chuck Norris trucker saga Breaker! Breaker! and the Cushing-Lee Horror Express.

I caught up with some more AfterMASH. Sofa Dogs celebrated 7 years with an episode of Angel with guest Tim Minear.

It was a very good week this week, with newcomers Views from the Long Box providing a couple of Superman commentaries. And I was tipped off to An Unexpected Podcast, who did one from Fellowship of the Ring, and also Doomed Planet, which is hosting a writer and director commentary for Would You Rather.

Sean Pultz released Edward Scissorhands, one that’s been on my want list for a long time, as well as the equally Deppy-Ridery Sleepy Hollow. Down in Front was back after several weeks with X-Men 2. Denim Cowboy dropped off Ghostbusters (with the Doctor from Speakeasy!) and The NeverEnding Story. Tysto weighed in with our first Mad Max.

Bradley Taylor continued his relentless (drugg-addled? alcohol-fueled?) march thru cinema with some classics and not-so-classics. Commentary Track Stars did The Fugitive. And I caught up with Shut up and Watch This, who have continued to do weird Asian stuff; also: The Iron Giant (our first!).

Dr. Action and the Kick Ass Kid did Van Damme’s directorial debut: The Quest. And Pulp Nightmare had fun with king of the impossible Flash Gordon.

Radio Free Skaro was back with some classic Who. Film Bin did the pilot episode of The A-Team.

It was a terrific week this week, with lots of superheroes and plenty of doctors.

Soulless Minions finished their backwards walk thru Superman (complementing their earlier backward walk thru Batman). I caught up with Nerdflix and their Spider-Man rampage (as well as Stephen King’s It). I likewise caught up with Geek Fights and their Superman rampage. GeekFest Rants did Superman: The Movie.

Terror Transmission did The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, while I caught up with Mostly Harmless Cutaway’s classic Doctor Who commentaries. Deaths Door Prods did Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which has a doctor in it. Pulp Nightmare took a second bite at RoboCop, in which doctors rebuilt a cop into a robot.

Commentary Track Stars went to Chinatown. Bradley Taylor did Shark Night 3D, Star Trek 5, and The Fog ’80. Rifftrax popped Breaking Dawn 2. Shut up and Watch This did the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings as well as Rock & Rule.

I added some more AfterMASH. Staggering Stories did some more Firefly.

Shut up and Watch This continued their Japanese kick and added Ralph Bakshi’s Fire and Ice. MMM Commentaries did The Avengers. BS01 was back after several months with the third Bionicle movie. Pulp Nightmare took on Slumber Party Massacre. Red Letter Media tackled Star Trek 5.

Radio Free Skaro returned with the latest new Who. I added some more AfterMASH. Sofa Dogs went back to Dollhouse. SModcast’s Secret Stash took a look at an episode of Comic Book Men.

Happy 200th, Bradley Taylor!(?)

Bradley Taylor has just racked up his 200th commentary on Zarban. In a matter of months, Bradley has done more commentaries than anyone else has ever done*, including those that have done them regularly for six or seven years. I’m not sure if that warrants congratulations or an intervention.

Bradley’s dedication to horror franchises is a hallmark of his work, and he’s filled out several. He will soon be the only person to have done all 9 Ernest movies. Actually, he’s the only person to have done ANY Ernest movies. It’s kind of baffling.

Congratulations, Bradley!

* I think Al Jean of the official Simpsons commentaries might still have him beat. It seems like he’s been on at least 2/3 of all the ones they’ve done for 15 seasons, which would amount to about 200.

It was a monster week, this week, with a big set of additions even with no AfterMASH. I caught up with Batman Universe, which had done some animated DC movies. I was tipped off to 2 in 1 Showcase, which has dome some DC animated stuff as well as Iron Man, Tron, and Toy Story. Geek Fights did some of the Batman animated series. I was also prompted (thanks, Jimbo!) to finish linking to my hosted versions of Into the Batcave’s animated Batman commentaries.

I was also tipped off to Bloodbaths and Boomsticks, who did Spookies. And SciFi FX, who did Stargate.

I caught up with Shut up and Watch This as they stepped up their looks at the Guyver movies and other Japanese terrible movies. Dr. Action and the Kick Ass Kid delivered chicks kicking ass in Point of No Return and Coffy. Bradley Taylor did more Dirty Harry.

MMM Commentaries did The Dark Knight Rises (only our 4th for that, surprisingly). Tysto Commentaries did Quantum of Solace, closing in on the end—for a while—of the James Bond series. Sean Pultz chose to free Lincoln.

Radio Free Nerdery, Two True Freaks, JoBlo Commentaries, Pulp Nightmare all did old standards. Dave from DVD Commentaries UK—now calling himself Video Warriors—did Porridge: The Movie. Commentary Track Stars did Junior, the missing jewel in the Schwarzenegger oeuvre, I’m sure, as well as some ST: TNG.

Terror Transmission dropped Argento’s Deep Red. Deaths Door Prods embarked on the journey that will be Resident Evil movies (good luck after the first one, guys).

Staggering Stories did a 10th Doctor ep. Cultdom Collective branched out into Breaking Bad and also did some 2nd Doctor.

I just noticed that the official Battlestar Galactica commentaries are now gone from the SyFy site. I imagine they’re on the DVDs and Blu-rays, and they’re official, so I won’t upload them and host them myself. That was 64 commentaries, which made them one of the most prolific. Ah well, that means Film Pigs gets back on the Most Commentaries list.
