No worries. We're not easily offended.

I see what you're saying in regards to CITIZEN KANE. One could argue that, while technically perfect, it is cold. CASABLANCA, on the other hand, has a greater emotional resonance despite its obvious flaws. That's fine (although I'd still argue that KANE is the better movie because, while rather sterile, it succeeds on an intellectual level that CASABLANCA lacks).

But the difference between that comparison and the one between T1 and T2 is that the two Terminator movies have similar goals, and the advanced technical skills which Cameron demonstrates in T2 allow him to reach those goals in a more effective way. In other words, I get more out of T2 emotionally because it is so perfectly executed.

Hi Mike,
• The names thing was meant to be funny when i was half awake this morning, hope you're both taking it in the same spirit.
• The cat won't fall out unless you push him.
• Well, here's my 2¢. I've seen T2 like 4 times i really like it, it's a much more polished movie than T1, but there's more to 'better' than that. I think taking film education too seriously is the reason Citizen Kane gets more praise than Casablanca (which to me is a better movie.) Technical execution is only part of it. Cameron's mastered the medium (today) as an entrepreneur, not as an artist. That's Kubrick (sometimes, and other too sometimes.) Either way he wasn't there yet in '91. I could go on too but i'll save it for T2.
• Please keep my pop filters spittle-free. :)

Hi Floss,

This is SemiConsciousCharlesGrodin. Thanks for listening.

The opening is the intro to the James Cameron Fan Podcast. I agree that it is rather silly, but since this commentary was hosted as an episode of the JCFP, I thought it was only right to put it on there.

As for my cat, I think I was right to be legitimately concerned for his safety. The window itself was open, with only a screen separating R (that's his name) from the 2-story drop. The thing about R is that he is frickin' fat. On numerous occasions, he has backed into the screen, thinking that it would support his weight. But I'm not convinced that it would. BoorishSethRogen downplayed the incident, but he is known for downplaying things into catastrophe.

I agree with you on the car issue. I don't know what point BoorishSethRogen was trying to make. Even though I personally wouldn't notice a difference between two generations of cop cars, I know that there are tons of car people out there who would notice it instantly.

I have to disagree with you re: T1 and T2. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that there is direct correlation between my continuing film education and my growing appreciation for T2. Conversely, the more I learn about movies, the more flaws I see in T1. T1 plays like Cameron's first draft on the concept. But T2 feels like the work of an artist who has fully mastered his medium.

I could go into further detail, but it probably makes sense just to save it for our T2 commentary, which (hopefully) we'll be doing relatively soon.

p.s. We named our pop filters after you!

Pretty good commentary. The fawning opening made me roll my eyes but it might've been added ironically. A James Cameron expert points out a lot of locations used in the film, and stays on topic while the others don't worry about that so much. I can't remember his name... I think of him as SemiConsciousCharlesGrodin, chases his cat around and worries about it jumping out the closed window (i can understand that cat being suicidal.) The other, BoorishSethRogen (who is sometimes very funny) talks over the others and randomly sez "omg! i might sneeze."

About the cop cars used in the movie: these two aren't aware that there are different kinds of cars. Guys i have a Plymouth Fury for sale, it's the best car. I usually like the movies they pick - check them out, you'll either like their style or you won't.

Since i'm feeling all opinionated: anyone who thinks T2 is better than T1 doesn't know anything about movies.

Good work by CTS and James Cameron Fan Podcast. The JCFP guys are quite nerdy and fannish, and it's only tempered a bit by Mike and Max. Overall they like it more than I did, but not too much.

Fergully was terrible. Dances with Wolves was better. Pocahontas wasn't bad. The Last Samurai was good except for the copout ending. All of them are better than Avatar except Fergully. Note that these are not timeless stories. They are specifically post-Vietnam American oops-we-mistreated-Indians-and-the-environment stories.
