Good commentary. Unfortunately they get some things wrong.

Yoda did say Luke was too old to train. Also, Mark Hamill was told that Vader would actually be saying "I am your father" right before they filmed the scene. David Prowse wasn't told this however. And sorry, Serge, but it wasn't Alec Guinness as the Emperor. It was (depending on the source) a woman with either a chimp's eyes superimposed over her eyes, or chimp-like makeup. I like the superimposed chimp eyes myself.

And while I don't like the idea of midichlorians, I don't believe it really "explains" the Force. The Force is still mysterious, the midichlorians are simply a way of showing how people connect to the Force. It was a way (a stupid way) to explain how some were more powerful than others, and a way to explain how the Sith were able to create Anakin - something many people miss in Revenge of the Sith.

CTS cues up Empire and has some fun analyzing the film. They compare it to the original and to the other films. Not a lot of scene-specific commentary, but good nerdery.

I saw Phantom Menace twice in the theater and liked it except for Jar Jar and some of the pod race stuff. Clones was appalling soap opera dreck. Sith was saddening, like an off-key funeral dirge.

The file is fully-separated two-channel audio, which is a little annoying with headphones. Also, in the NTSC version, there are at least a couple of places where a couple of seconds of audio is repeated (about 0:00:30 and 0:14:00), which may affect your sync.

Down in Front applies their patented formula to the sci fi classic of all sci fi classics. However, their attempt to take the movie on its own terms without reference to the sequels, let alone the prequels, completely falls apart about 2 minutes in. But it gets funnier and funnier until, by the end, it's laugh out loud for the whole ending.

Damnation Alley. Heh heh heh. JMV and George Peppard in a heavily-armored recreational vehicle. Heh, heh, heh. When I saw that in the 1980s, my friends and I classed it with Death Race 2000.

Another robot that gets bored and talks to itself? Marvin the Paranoid Android is the only one I can think of.

Rifftrax offers a very good ending to the Star Wars saga, finally taking on Jabba, the emperor, and ewoks. They're appropriately sickened by the specialness of the Special Edition and sometimes simply mock Lucas outright in disgust.

Very, very funny stuff from IHN. The saga of Toby the domesticated bantha was a highlight.

They're watching the Baltimore version with commercials.

I would have been 11 when this first aired, but I don't have any memory of it at all. I don't know if I watched it or even knew it would be on.

Very, very funny take by MMM on the most bizarre bit of Star Wars. The running gag about all the TVs, the hilarity around the look of cartoon Han, and the general appalled disappointment with the whole Wookie variety show/anti-fascism propaganda film format is terrific. But the highlight comes at the end where David does Chewbacca narrating footage of Star Wars with him as the hero.

Uncharacteristically flat commentary from AfterShock. Mostly just reminiscences, marveling, and line-quoting. It does get fairly funny toward the end.

Changing the monkey-eyed woman to Sidious was good. But changing Boba Fett's voice to match Jango's Kiwi growl was stupid. Boba's voice was one of the things that made him cool and mysterious. Hayden Christensen didn't sound jack crap like Vader. JEJ affects a partial English accent.

Brandon mentions Tim Burton as champion of stop-motion in the Hoth scene and not just at the end, when he claims it's the first time (and totally gets busted on it).

Great commentary from Speakeasy on the last of the first of the Star Wars. Thanks, guys!

I think Luke's plan was more like Leia freeing Han and slipping out, then Luke going in and taking care of Jabba (with R2's help) so Han wouldn't have to watch his back.

It's The Hidden Fortress rather than Yojimbo that Star Wars was inspired by. That one has the two peasant soldiers, the princess and her samurai protector, the duel with the old nemesis, and so on. Yojimbo was the basis for A Fistful of Dollars.

Good, tho fannish, commentary from IHN Radio. The movie audio is up a bit too high, tho, so the commentators are sometimes downed out by the loud scenes, at least at the beginning.

Props to the ewoks. But no, they shouldn't be able to hear the death star exploding on Endor. It exploded in space, where there is no medium to transfer the wave.
